Keep your home free of clutter. Clutter provides hiding places and harborages for pests. This removes pests’ shelter and makes the environment less hospitable.

Keep the home, especially the kitchen and dining areas, clean. Pests are always looking for food and keeping things clean and food off the floor makes the pests go looking somewhere else.

Change exterior lighting to yellow bulbs. Insects are attracted to white light and spiders are attracted to insects. Yellow bulbs are less attractive to insects and will then in turn not be as attractive to spiders.

Turn off lights at night. Insects like crickets are attracted to light, so turning off lights, especially in the basement or main level, will make the home less attractive to pests.

Remove trash frequently. Many pests, including flies, ants, and cockroaches, are attracted to trash, so prompt removal is very helpful. Also, cleaning the trash can periodically is a good idea because sometimes gunk gets left in the bottom of the can.

Seal up the home as much as you can. Many homes have gaps and holes around the foundation that can be easy entries to pests. These should be located and sealed. Doors that are not properly sealed should be. If you stand inside looking at the door and you can see light around any part of the door, it should be better sealed. All windows should have screens in place that are in good condition.

Trim plants and trees back from your home. Ideally there should be a gap of a few feet between your home and plants. Plants act as harborages for insects, and having them so close to the home allows the pest greater access to crawling on and into the home. Also, trimming plants back from the home allows the residual put down by Spider Spray to be more effective.

Do not store firewood against the home. Firewood can act as a harborage for many pests, including mice and spiders. Firewood also attracts termites, which then can find an entry into the home.

Fix any leaky pipes. Leaky pipes provide water to pests and can create infestations of unwanted pests.

Removal cobwebs. In between treatments, if any spider webs develop on or around the home, remove these with a brush or broom. Many spiders depend on their webs for food, and if their webs are destroyed, they will often move on to a different location. Please be careful as we do have several species of poisonous spiders here in Utah, so make sure you do not get too close or that spiders do not attach themselves onto the broom.
